What is a crisis nursery?
A crisis nursery offers to take in children under 7 when a family is experiencing a short term emergency and cannot provide adequate care for the children themselves. Some examples of these emergencies are unexpected medical issues, domestic violence, or sudden homelessness or job loss.
What happens in a crisis nursery?
Children are dropped off at crisis nurseries and fed, cared for, and watched over by background checked staff. The parents may be linked to other community resources that can help them get back on their feet (see Success Stories).
We, here in Winnebago and Boone Counties, are very lucky to have one of only six crisis nurseries in Illinois at hand. MotherHouse is a Children’s Home and Aid facility located in Rockford. It is open 24 hours a day and its services are free. If you or someone you know is experiencing crises and cannot care for your child call 815 962-4858.
