I have so much respect for child and youth protection workers. These folks have an unbelievably difficult job. The situations that they deal with on a day to day basis are fraught with tension and real-life risk. I am grateful for these colleagues, because I believe that it takes extraordinary people to commit themselves to this type of career.
One of my colleagues who works in the foster care system in the U.S. brought to attention a recent article in New York Magazine chronicling the case of a young girl who died from malnutrition and neglect in one of the toughest neighbourhoods in New York City.

What resulted from this tragic event, was that the child welfare worker and his supervisor were both arrested, charged and are currently awaiting trial with a serious risk of being sentenced to a jail term.
